Problems 5.7

Question 1.iii
You will need to consult your Heywood tables to answer the following questions. When calculating the settling velocity given a particle diameter (x) the value of log(Px) is first calculated. Then the first two significant figures of log(Px) are given by the first column of the table, the second and third come from the scale given at the top of the table (the first row). The corresponding value of log(U/Q) is then read or estimated from the table and converted into a value for U using the calculated function Q.

Use your Heywood tables to complete the following:
Particle diameter (microns): 1 10 50 100 1000
log(Px): --- --- 0.156 0.457 1.457
log(U/Q): --- --- -1.072 A 0.759

The term A missing from the above is:

  a) -0.513
b) -0.413
c) -0.313
d) -0.213
