Question 2.viii

OK, so we can force the flow into something approaching laminar by asking for an unrealistic number of trays to be put in to our settling chamber: 385 is not sensible. However, if we could make the flow laminar, this question asks you to calculate what happens for a 25 micron particle, if you use your knowledge that we have just designed for a 50 micron particle and Stokes' settling equation you can work this one out without doing much in the way of calculations.

settling chamber

The chamber was designed to be 5 metres long for 100% collection of the 50 micron particles.

Assuming 100% collection of 50 micron particles, what will be the collection efficiency (%) for 25 micron particles?

  a) 100
b) 50
c) 25
d) 0
Note, take a look at Stokes' settling equation and think how it was used in the design.
